Forex and stock trading stations with multiple monitors.

Multi-Monitor-Control-Room-Console-10Trading with multiple monitors is very popular nowadays, not only with institutional traders, but also with home based trades. In an increasingly competitive market and so much information available one monitor is simply not enough to keep an eye on several charts and news feed(s). The reason one would need so many monitors is so multiple trading charts could be open at any one time, with a 4 monitor set up, about 6 currency charts could be opened as well as a news feed and the main trading terminal.

Monitors are extremely cheap, so anyone can have a relatively decent set up for under $500. Below you will see some trading stations starting with one monitor going up to 4 monitors. Choice of desk and chair is also as important as the choice of monitors. The desk needs to be extremely comfortable so you can look at your many monitors without straining your neck.

Any station above 4 monitors is considered a more advanced set up, costs with those increase as 1 PC might not be able control that many monitors(or will be prohibitively expensive). The costs involved in a 8 monitor set up are 2PCs with 4 monitors each and a monitor mount for 8 monitors, alternatively the set up could be with a single PC with multiple video cards. A set up with 2 PCs will give a redundancy to the system so in case one PC went down the whole system will not come down but onl half of your monitor real estate will be down. A trader at a trading forum recently shared his set up, which is 8 monitors with 1 PC(several video cards). The set up cost him about 1500 to complete, however he bought many monitors and computer parts used on ebay, a realistic price for a new system like that would be closer to $3000.

The parts involved in building an 8 monitor system(prices are as of Feb 2012) Price per PC including Video Cards, RAM, CPUs - $300-400. Best multi monitor systems aer custom build, if you choose the route of buying a pre-built configuration you might end up paying a higher price.

  • 2 Desktop PCs(assuming you will be running Windows 7)
  • Minimum a dual Core CPU(preferably a quad-core), the Main PC should have a more powerful CPU
  • RAM of at least 4GB
  • 2 Dual DVI Video Cards per PC
  • No special requirements for Hard Drive, any drive will do. Recommended is an SSD hard drive on one of the PCs for very fast response time
  • 4 Monitors Per PC, recommended are square monitors, rather than the now common wide screen. Price per monitor - $100-$125
  • 1 or 2 multiple monitor stands, aternatively install monitors on the wall
  • Multi Monitor software, in order to control all monitors from 1 keyboard/mouse. Such as MaxiVista($39.95)

Below you will see trading stations with up to 24 monitors. While 24 monitors is extreme, 6 to 8 monitors is relatively cheap to build.

20 Monitor trading station set upThe 20 Monitor trading station set up of hedge fund manager Adam Sanders

Adam Sanders is the founder and chief executive officer of Exis Capital Management Inc. a relatively small hedge fund. His set up really shows what the big guys in the trading world use so many monitors for.

A home based trader could easily build an 8 monitor workstation, as we showed, this could be achiever for as little as $1500(as of February 2011), and prices will only come down in the future.

Howdy! Quick question that's totally off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile
friendly? My site looks weird when viewing from my iphone.
I'm trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to
fix this problem. If you have any recommendations , please share.
Many thanks!
